Introduction to Indigo Dyeing

An opportunity to learn about the fascinating process of dyeing with Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria) and the stunning effects that can be created using a few simple techniques. Students will learn how to prepare and maintain an Indigo vat, to harness beautiful shades of blue; and prepare natural fibres such as silk, cotton and wool to create unique patterns using simple resist techniques in the dyeing process.

Introduction to Botanical Dyeing

An opportunity to explore the fascinating process of extracting colour from plants and using it for dyeing natural fibres such as raffia, cotton, wool and silk.

This workshop will provide an introduction to the process of botanical dyeing. It will cover how to prepare various materials with a mordant before dyeing them; how to extract colour from plant material such as bark, berries, leaves and vegetable matter; how to adjust and enhance the colour; and how to dye your fibre. During the workshop we will be using four different mordants; four different dyes and four different fibres and you will have the opportunity to dye your own material.
